Hack day at Singly

Every so often, we have an internal hack day. This can mean different things, but this time around we broke off into teams to build applications on the Singly platform.  We started off the morning with problem/solution pitches from everyone on the team, and then narrowed down to three popular projects. Here’s what we’re building today:

AfterLife (Temas + Beau)

Problem: Too much noise in my feeds across services

Solution: Present feed in a visually appealing way with basic info from each post. I can drag each post up to “heaven” or down to “hell.” I can later see if lots of posts from a specific user went to hell, in which case I may want to remove that person from my social graph.

Foodie Follower (Tyler + Kristján)

Problem: Too many great restaurants. Yelp doesn’t help me see where people whose opinions I trust are eating out.

Solution: Select a set of people in your network whose food preferences you trust, and see the restaurants where they check in, post photos, etc.

Do I know? (Simon, Jer, Sash)

Problem: I receive hundreds of non-spam emails each day. I need a way to know if I know the people who are emailing me.

Solution: A lightweight email app. I click a “Do I Know?” button, and the app checks all my networks, and pops up a red or green light next to each. If I get a red light on each service, I likely don’t know the person.

Simon goes to the Oscars?

Simon (co-founder and engineer at Singly) has a hacker/geek facade. But when he gets around other A-list celebrities and his Hollywood friends, “Smurthas” shows a different side. Last night he “rolled deep” with some of Silicon Valley’s most illustrious investors and a cadre of models (of course) to the Oscars. Check him out on the red carpet! (And for good measure, get a glimpse of admiring onlookers in the background).

Simon Murtha-Smith doesn't always pose for TMZ. But when he does, he shows them the bottom of his shoe.

Why work here?

Here’s what Alistair Croll said last year when we asked what he thought about Singly’s vision:

We also like to keep it real with a some fun, too.

Hackday

Every couple of weeks, our engineering team has a hackday. It’s a time when our engineers can work on Singly-related side projects that are outside of current feature or infrastructure milestones. It can be building apps, connecting the platform to more services or anything else they choose to do. It’s always fun to see what they come up with–check out a quick sum-up of yesterday’s hackday:

Singly goes out on the town

Every so often a group of hardworking, focused people has to sit back and relax, so last night we went out on the town.

Starting off at Flour + Water for dinner, we had a family-style meal with a panoply of pasta and pizza.  The food was outstanding; a few favorites were the squid ink pasta and the mushroom pizza. Needless to say, the wine was great too.

Then we wandered down the street to hang out with the local tech start community at the Mission Startup Drinkup, which was sponsored buy Atlassian, awe.sm, Jimdo and Storenvy.

We’re glad to be in a neighborhood with so much innovation, motivation and personality. We also enjoyed the open bar.

After a night of relaxation and fun, the Singly team was back to the grind for our 9 0′clock standup this morning.
